1. Brain training
Jigsaw puzzles make your entire brain work. The left and right sides of the brain work differently; the left is our analytical side and the right is creative. When working to complete a puzzle, we have to logically sort out the pieces (analysing) and we also have to use our creative side to intuitively place puzzle pieces to see the finished product.
2. Dopamine release
Have you ever had that feeling of happiness wash over you when you complete the final puzzle, or even just get one piece correctly fitted? Of course you do! Successfully piecing together a puzzle encourages the production of dopamine. Dopamine is a brain chemical that improves learning and memory. Happy brain = healthy brain.
3. Got kids? Cut down their screen time AND get them learning
Playing with jigsaw puzzles helps to enhance mental and intellectual growth in young children, and also improves hand-eye coordination. I know it’s hard to initially tear them away from those screens but give it a try.. Most people get addicted once started!
4. Live for longer!
Several large scale studies (the most notable being the MacArthur Study) found that people who play with jigsaw puzzles have a better quality of life and have longer life expectancy.
5. Help to prevent progressive impairment of the brain
Playing with jigsaw puzzles also reduces the chances of developing mental illness like memory loss, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease.
6. Easy on the eyes
Jigsaw puzzles are easy on the eyes, as there is no backlight and no glare that slowly wears down your vision, as opposed to today’s internet, video games and television.
7. Focus, clarity and relaxation
Assembling jigsaw puzzles helps to clear your mind and relax. You will feel delight as you see the puzzle getting closer and closer to completion with every piece you piece together. Not to mention, the sense of achievement and satisfaction when you complete your jigsaw puzzle! Think of it as a form of meditation - listen to music or a podcast in the background, or just clear your mind. Many people find it beneficial for their level of focus and efficiency on work and other tasks, after working on a puzzle.
